Interview Project
for Alexander McQueen S/S '22
This final project was to develop a Spring/Summer 2022 collection for a company I would (in theory) like to interview for. The aim is to properly understand the brand, the market, and what new kinds of ideas I have to offer. Had to complete and document company and target market background research, inspiration research (mood and trend), and tactile research. The collection had to consist of four final looks and I had to create a sample garment of one look — along with its final patterns and tech pack.
The Alexander McQueen brand was founded by designer Alexander McQueen in 1992, in London, UK. The house's early collections developed its reputation for controversy and shock tactics. The earlier clothing frequently featured slashed, stabbed, and torn cloth, as well as McQueen's brutally sharp style of tailoring. While the brand today still uses the signature edgy tailoring techniques, it is shown with much more polish while still maintaining the designers aesthetic of dark, twisted romance with clean and detailed tailoring techniques.
The RTW collections are generally targeted to an age group of around mid-20s to 40s, high class shoppers - because of its high price point. The aesthetic of the collections overall is not the most common, but because most of the pieces, when sold individually, fit a much wider range of styles and target a much wider range of people - like fitted blazers and suit pants, that could be styled very differently.
The trends of 2020 and 2021 are pretty close, they generally include the brand signature tailored blazer suits and coats, shoulder volume dresses, hand dyed fabrics, and defined waist silhouettes using leather belts and fitted tailoring.
